Chinese Sculpture

1. The Nature and Objectives of the Course

Chinese Sculpture mainly includes learning the techniques of making Chinese sculptures. The course aims to show Chinese sculpture art to the students from the aspects of Chinese ancient sculpture, Chinese folk sculpture and Chinese Buddhist sculpture.

2. Course Content

Part One: Basic knowledge of Chinese traditional sculpture

In this part, by usingthe soldiers and horses of Qin Dynasty as examples, the teacher will analyze the shapes, patterns and metaphors of Chinese sculpture which can be also extended to customs, geomantic structures and interior sculptures. The main content of the course will include: the prerequisite, concept and extension of sculpture; multi-dimensionality, spatiality and usability of sculpture; the round and the relief; sculpture methods (shaping, carving and building); materials of sculpture; expressions in sculpture.

Part Two: Basic techniques of Chinese traditional sculpture

    Unit 1: Chinese traditional sculpture in the street stalls

1). Making: teaching students the Chinese traditional sculpturing techniques, include: Shanxi clay brick sculpture, Shaanxi clay sculpture, Fengxiang painted sculpture, Yixing red stonewares, etc.

2). Visiting: visiting the sculpture factory of Nanjing Sculpture Association and Yunjie Sculpture Studio;

3). Assignment: making a clay sculpture within the size of 1250px*1250px*1250px.

    Unit 2: Buddhist Sculpture

1). Making: teaching students the techniques of making sculptures of Buddha head;

2). Visiting: visiting Jiming Temple, Qixia Temple and Dinglin Temple in order to understand the Buddhist culture and the principles of making Buddhist sculptures;

3). Assignment: using appropriate material to make a sculpture of Buddha head  within the size of 1250px*1250px*1250px.

Part Three: Course Assignment

Designing and making a sculpture within the size of 2000px*2000px*2000px on the basis of the students’ hometown culture and the knowledge learned in class. The sculpture can be made of plaster, ceramic, clay, etc.

3. Requirements of the Course

By illustrating and explaining with examples, the course tend to make students innovate and create their own works; by accomplishing the assigned tasks, the students are advocated to use their professional knowledge.

1). Site arrangement: basic knowledge learning and small sculpture making practice will be finished in Sipailou Campus; visiting the sculpture factory of Nanjing Sculpture Association (sculpture materials) and temples in Nanjing (Buddhist sculpture); medium-sized sculpture making practice will be arranged at Yunjie Sculpture Studio near Jiulonghu Campus.

2). Time schedule: half-day/one-day intensive lectures and practice

3). Materials: students can buy by themselves or commission the teacher to buy.

4). Exhibition of students’ works: after finishing the course, some excellent student works will be displayed in an art exhibition at Sipailou Campus.

5. Assessment and Examination

Final Grade=Average Grade (10%)+Attendance (10%)+Marks of Works (80%)

中国雕塑艺术


一、课程的性质与目的

该课程以中国雕塑艺术的制作和技法学习为主,结合考察指导,通过中国古代雕塑艺术、中国民间泥塑、中国佛教造像、手制雕塑基础等方面向学生呈现出缤纷的中国雕塑世界,使学习者进一步感受中国传统艺术魅力。

二、课程内容的教学要求

第一部分:中国传统雕塑艺术基础知识(2学时)

雕塑艺术是一种文化的积淀,是历史脚步的缩影,也是时代精神的展现。本部分立足中国传统文化,以世界著名的秦始皇兵马俑为引子,深入中国雕塑艺术的造型、中国雕塑艺术的纹样、中国雕塑艺术的隐喻,延伸到城市习俗与环境雕塑、风水格局与宅内雕塑。从材料到工艺,灌输中国雕塑艺术的基础知识。其中包括:雕塑的存在前提、概念与外延;雕塑的立体性、空间性与工艺性;圆雕与浮雕;雕塑的方法:塑造、雕刻与构造;雕塑的材料;雕塑的表现等知识点。

第二部分:中国传统雕塑技法基础(14学时)

第一单元 散落在坊间的中国传统雕塑

1.制作:选用统一材料指导学生中国传统造型手法练习,学习民间雕塑技法包括:山西泥塑砖雕与陕西泥玩造、风翔彩塑、无锡惠山泥人、宜兴紫砂、景德镇陶塑等制作技法手段。

2.参观:前往南京市雕塑协会相关雕塑厂,指导工艺制作,翻模技法。参观云介雕塑艺术工作室,熟悉成型工艺与烧制工艺。

3.作业:根据学习的传统造型手法,选用合适泥料载体,创作不超过1250pxX1250pxX1250px的中国民间工艺雕塑品。

第二单元 佛教造像

1.制作:选用统一材料——雕塑泥,指导留学生进行中国佛教造像——佛首造型技法手段。

2.参观:前往鸡鸣寺、栖霞山、方山定林寺等寺庙现场讲解寺庙中的佛教文化和造像原则,寺庙中的佛教泥塑、佛教文化与造型创作研究。

3.作业:根据学习的传统造型手法,选用合适泥料载体,创作不超过2000pxX2000pxX2000px的佛首雕塑。

第三部分:课程作业

结合留学生本国背景和课堂学过的雕塑知识,制作一组雕塑作品,不超过2000pxX2000pxX2000px的雕塑作品,可以是石膏翻模、陶瓷雕塑、泥塑等。

三、能力培养的要求

启发学生自己创新,用实例进行说明、讲解;启发学生运用所学知识进行设计创意,通过设计作业训练学生实际运用专业知识的能力,并进行针对性的个体辅导。

1.场地安排:

四牌楼提供的相关场地进行基础知识学习、小型雕塑(如泥人、软陶塑形、泥条盘筑等)练习制作部分。

参观与实践指导环节根据课程需要,工艺材料部分参观南京市雕协雕塑厂、佛教造像参观南京地区庙堂佛教造型、中型雕塑制作安排在东南大学九龙湖校区南门外云介雕塑工作室。

2.时间安排:以半天或整天的集中授课与练习指导为主。

3.材料安排:学生自行购买与教师代买均可。

4.作品展览:

完成课程教学后,甄选学生优秀作品在四牌楼校区举办一场校园艺术展览。
