Academic Regulations on Learning Chinese at
College of International Students,
Southeast University (revised version for the new normal)
1.In order to place new students into an appropriate level of Chinese language course, placement tests are organized at the beginning of the autumn semester, in late August or early September. New students who have already received basic Chinese language instruction are required to take a placement test arranged by CIS’s Chinese Center, after which students will be placed into an appropriate Chinese language class.
2.Attendance is required for all courses: (a) Any student who misses 25% of the total credit hours required of a course without the Chinese Center’s permission will not be allowed to take the final examination or any make-up examination; (b) Three instances of coming late to class or leaving class early will be recorded as one absence in attendance; (c) Any student missing 25% attendance of the 1st half of the semester will not be allowed to take the mid-term examination, and only after promising in written form to achieve 90% attendance for the 2ndhalf of the semester and successfully doing it, will that student be allowed to take the final examination and make up the mid-term examination; (d)Students with severe medical problems are expected to miss no more than one third of the total credit hours; (e) Students who ask for leave of absence for one or more days should get an application form from the International Students Office, receive a signature of approval from the course teacher and Chinese Center, and finally submit the application to the International Students Office; (f) In normal circumstances, students should not ask for a leave of absence for exceeding two weeks. During online teaching, students who ask for leave can go through the procedures by email and submit electronic forms to the relevant administration of CIS (forms can be asked from Office of International Students).
3. Aside from winter and summer vacation, courses will also not be held on the following holidays: Tomb Sweeping Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-autumn Festival and the National Holiday Week. However, because these holidays sometimes fall mid-week resulting in the cancellation of class on a normal working day, students may need to attend make-up lessons as arranged by the university.
4. Students who cannot not take the mid-term or final examination because of an illness, working commitment, or other overwhelming reason should fill out an application for a make-up examination, provide evidence (from a hospital or workplace), get a signature from the course teacher, and finally send these documents to the Chinese Center. Only students whose applications are approved by the Chinese Center will be eligible for make-up tests. Make-up tests will only be arranged in the first two weeks of the following semester, and the Chinese Center does not allow make-up tests for an individual student.
5. Assessment is made according to a student’s grades and the scores of the midterm exam and the final exam. Final Grades are the calculated sum of course grades, the mid-term exam and the final exam. The overall assessment is divided into the following parts: 70% from course grades, 15% from the mid-term exam and 15% from the final exam. Course grades include class attendance (20%), performance (20%), assignments (20%) and unit testing (10%). An unauthorized absence from one class will often result in the deduction of one point. Students who missed the registration deadline for their courses or missed the midterm examination will be given a final assessment according to the course grade and the score of the final exam, each accounting for 50% of the total grade. For courses where an essay is written in lieu of an examination, final assessment will be calculated according to the course grade (70%) and the grade of the essay (30%).Every student has to submit all assignments in time, and cannot submit make-up assignments just before the examinations or else they are not allowed to take mid-term or final examinations.
6. Students who fail the assessment may be given a make-up test, but may not receive a score exceeding 60 upon passing (the full score is 100). Student who fails the make-up test must pay 3000 yuan for one semester to re-take all the Chinese courses and examinations before being allowed to continue on to the academic major programs. Students studying major programs who fail a Chinese course have to pay 150 yuan for one credit hour to retake the Chinese course.
7.Students who already have good knowledge regarding a certain course may be exempt from attendance only after applying and receiving written permission from the course teacher and the Chinese Center. After exemption is approved by the Chinese Center, students still must take the final examination in order to get a final score for the course.
8.Under all circumstances, students should not ask the teacher to raise their scores. If any student cheated during the examination of a course, he would not be allowed to take a make-up examination. Instead, he has to pay to retake the course.
9.Students (including undergraduates, graduates) can enter their major programs after one year Chinese learning only when:
They have passed the Chinese language final examinations organized by the Chinese Center;
They have passed HSK Level 4 (consult different colleges for the language requirement; some colleges require HSK Level 5 or higher).
Eligibility for entering major programs is reviewed by CIS’s Academic Affairs Office. A student who is not eligible to enter the major program after the review should pay the extra fee (see 6) to study Chinese language for another year.
通过汉语中心组织的汉语结业考试;
